Soils & ForestThe Problem with Palm Oil
Did you know that more than 50% of the products on your local grocery store shelf contain palm oil? With the demand for palm oil on the rise, vast tracks of rainforests are being clear cut, significantly adding to the growing global warming threat. In addition to depriving some of the world's most endangered species of key habitats, tropical deforestation is also pushing the indigenous people of the rainforest from their rightful lands. The situation is dire but with your help, we can change all of this. You can be part of the conversation.
Dazzling celosias
Celosias used to thought of mainly as pot plants, and they were also favourites for decorating events at town halls and other municipal venues. But I grew celosias as summer annuals in mixed borders a few years ago and they were superb. As the summer climate improves and as more adaptable varieties are introduced, growing a trial out in the open on the trials field has provided one of the most colourful of the summer's trials.

Arbor Day on the Great Plains
Today is Arbor Day, tree-planting day. By my lucky break on an airline ticket sale, I’m in Nebraska, where the first Arbor Day was declared in 1872. We don’t think about the great plains state as a heart of forestry. According to one account, on the first Arbor Day more than a million trees were planted in Nebraska and a thousand school children marched in the first Arbor Day parade. Now that was a movement somebody got behind.

Poor soil management...
...could speed climate change, report warns by Michael Smith Poor soil management could worsen climate change, a new report by the European Commission warns. On a worldwide scale, soils contain around twice the amount of carbon in the atmosphere and three times the amount found in vegetation, so soil is both "a source and a sink of greenhouse gases", says the report.
