Alternative fuels that don't cost energy

I know that their are alternative out there that are better for the environment and all that, but is there any altertnative to fuel that doesn't cost alot and use alot of energy in order to produce?

In addition, with alternative fuel we need fueling stations and those also cost money to build . . .

Do you think that in the future we will have gas less cars or will it just be all hybrids that are just better on gas mileage? What is realistic?
