The leading environmental groups in Russia launched a lawsuit on Friday against the gas and oil giant, Exxon, for threatening the world's last Gray Whale population. There are only around 130 of this amazing species left in the world, and the pipeline that will be constructed in their habitat may hurt these numbers even further.
The Russian government has already approved the plans for the pipeline, but this lawsuit will hopefully cause some sort of injunction against the building of this pipeline.

The other day conservationists in China celebrated the birth of eight endangered Red Pandas. There were two sets of triplets, a pair of twins and two single Red Pandas. Sadly the twins did not survive, but the conservationists were still exuberant at the birth of 8 baby pandas. The cubs were all born at the Fuzhou Panda World Research Center.
Red Pandas live in the Himalayas of Bhutan, in southern China, India, Laos, Nepal, and Burma. » read more

Scientists that measure and study the populations of birds in regions of the Northeast, specifically Seavey Island and the Isle of Shoals, are worried about the Roseate tern population. Numbers of the Roseate tern are down 20% with only 40 pairs of Roseate terns, and 46 Roseate tern chicks being counted this summer.

Today the US federal government has designated over 625 square miles of mountain range as a protected habitat for the endangered Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep. Conservationists had to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2005 in order to have this land protected. The lawsuit stated that the Sierra Nevada
bighorn sheep was threatened with extinction because this habitat wasn't
protected under the Endangered Species Act as it should be.

This question has been in my mind all night. What would you do if you saw an animal eating an endangered plant? Since it is illegal to kill endangered animals and destroying endangered plants is prohibited, what would you do? I am seriously confused. Please relpy...

After a brief stint on the "threatened list", the gray wolf has been placed back on the endangered species list. The gray wolf of the greater Yellowstone area (northern Rocky Mountains) was removed from the endangered species list in March, making this animal fair game for hunters. The July ruling of Judge Donald W. Molloy of the Federal District Court has placed the animal back under the protection of the Endangered Species Act.

It feels good to do something that actually brings about some action! Today I received a thank you email from the Defenders of Wildlife organization, thanking me for my participation in the petition drive to stop the killing of Wolves in the Northern Rockies. The Grey Wolf had been taking off the endangered list, and moved to the "Threatened" list, which allowed people to kill these animals. » read more

The Bengal Tiger population at the Suklaphanta Reserve in Nepal has been on the decline. In 2005 there was 20 to 50 Bengals living at the Eastern Himalayan site according to a WWF survey. Now, there is only about 6 to 14 Bengals. The reason for this decrease....poachers.
The estimates are based on the results of a long-term WWF camera trap
study which ironically captured images of armed men on poaching
expeditions rather than expected Bengals (Pictured to the right). » read more

Thanks to philanthropist and businessman George Whipple the historic Tilly Foster farm in Putnam county New York will be saved. Jacob sheep and Randall Lineback cattle which are both endangered farm animals, will be brought to the Tilly Foster farm, which is about 30 miles north of White Plains. The historic farm has had some rough times ever since the mid 1980s when Tilly Foster managed to fight off developers. Then in 2000, it was foreclosed on, and in 2002 it was taken over by the county, who shut down their horse-boarding operation in December.
