    'Rock Rabbit' Another Climate Victim
    Greenopolis Founder

The American Pika, or 'Rock Rabbit,' is becoming just another victim of climate change. In fact, researchers are saying this creature is the "canary in the coal mine" for the American West, a sign of more drastic changes to come. This animal is the first warning sign because it is so sensitive to heat. The pika lives at high altitudes where the temperatures stay low. Even a temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit can endanger the pika if it is exposed for longer than an hour or two. » read more

Amount of Heavy Rainfall to Increase
    Greenopolis Founder

With the summer being mostly rainy, at least for the Northeast, with many warnings of rain, thunderstorms, and flash floods a study study has found that the rainy years be the noirm in the future.

A study conducted at the University of Miami and the University of Reading, provides evidence confirming the link between a warmer climate and more powerful rainstorms.

The team studied 20 years of satellite observations and examined the relationship between tropical rainfall and changes in surface temperatures, as well as amospheric moisture. » read more

    Crying on a Sunny Day
    Greenopolis Thought LeaderGreenopolis Founder

It is a sunny day here in Vermont, but I like most in America am down in the dumps.  And I think a lot of it has to do with our current crisis in leadership.  We have little pride in what the presidency has become and scanter confidence that Congress is going to do anything that will help America become the great world leader we once were.  And no place is this more evident than in energy policy. » read more

    Carbon Shredders in Congress
    Greenopolis Thought LeaderGreenopolis Founder

This morning Congressman Peter Welch of Vermont recognized the actions of the Carbon Shredders in a floor statement.  This group founded by three partners involved in the Greenopolis effort--Seventh Generation, Green Mountain Coffee Roaster and Yestermorrow Design/Build School--brought together groups and organized them using David Gershon's Low Carbon Diet Book (see Green Tips on this site).  So really this is an honor for this group of players as well as the Greenopolis site.  Way to go everyone!  For more on this story see: » read more

Is Global Warming TRUE OR FALSE?
    Greenopolis Founder

I've been thinking a lot about whether "Global Warming" is just rhetoric, or if it's something that is a real issue. The term "Global Warming" is under debate as it stands, but it seems that all scientists agree that our climate is changing. Whether or not this climate change is due to humans or not is what has become the hot debate.

As I see it, there are at least two main points on this issue:

    The Endless Fight
    Greenopolis Founder

It is not often that I find myself at wit's end because of an arguement. I don't usually let myself get carried away when discussing differences with friends. But there was one arguement that has yet to leave my mind, and that was about Global Warming.

I was in Wisconsin with a large group of friends. We all--boys and girls--met up during the day to go for boat rides, do water sports, or just lay back and swim. We were all having a blast.

One day we all went down to the dock to untie the boat so we could do some wakeboarding. » read more

    Climate Change Hits Some Harder
    Greenopolis Founder

We've all heard about the dangers that global warming poses to life as we know it, and the doomsday scenarios it could trigger. But not everyone is equally worried about climate change. Some nations are facing immediate threats due to rising seas, while at least one country is welcoming global warming.

Crazy Weather Due To Global Warming?
    Greenopolis Founder

This summer's weather has been blasting most of the United States this summer and some are wondering if this unusually severe weather will now be the norm? With sea levels rising, and the glaciers melting, maybe this is just the way things will be every year?

In the Northeast severe thunderstorms have been pounding the residents of numerous states. In New Hampshire severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings are a daily event. A house has collapsed in Epsom as a result of this fierce weather, and one is feared dead. » read more

    Farming from the Sea
    Greenopolis Founder

Many see the beach as a fun place to go on a summer's day, and a great way to cool off. Carl Hodges, an atmospheric physicist, sees it as the future of agricultural development, and a future fuel source. He is already successfully growing the plant Salicornia in seawater canals near the Sea of Cortez.

Hodges believes the plant could very easily be used to create biofuel. The benefit here is that we would not be used a food crop such as corn to do this. Instead we would be using a crop that has no impact on the world food market.  » read more

EPA: Global Warming is a Health Threat
    Greenopolis Founder

The EPA has released a report stating global warming, and the climate change could result in "substantial" health risks, such as heat waves, hurricanes, and pathogens in the future. Other risks include an increase in amount of diseases contracted through food and water.

The report comes after the agency recently decided to not regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act.

The report claims that in Eastern cities, the warmer climate will create bad air days, similar to that of California. » read more

A terrific article in the NY Times this morning on capturing wind energy in the form of compressed air. One issue with wind is that it only produces energy when it is blowing. Storing the excess in batteries or using it to turn sea water into hydro...
