I recently read a story on PlanetGreen.com about UMass students that were bringing low cost solar and wind energy to developing nations. I was so intrigued that I had to write about it.

Problem with the Pickens Plan and one so

Lets start with explaining a  part of the Pickens plan, which proposes creating wind farms in  the Midwest to shift “America's natural” gas from power generation, freeing it up “to replace imported oil as a transportation fuel”. The problem is that we don’t need a lot of electricity in the Midwest, we need it in the big cities and industrial centers. The Pickens plan to its credit address this by proposing “Building a 21st century backbone electrical transmission grid”. That will take time, millions if not billions of dollars and have a significant environmental impact.

Solar product‏s

Solar products and their potential are receiving more and more attention as people become increasingly interested in alternative forms of energy. Of course, this isn't the only thing that contributes to their popularity. Many people simply love keeping up with new technology. This technology in particular is known for being easy to install, use, and maintain. It is also known for its lack of follow-up energy costs.
It is not necessary to purchase a large amount of solar products in order to reap benefits for the home.

OK George Soros, Quit Playing Around

The stock market today is climbing and I’m happily watching my solar investments fly towards the sun at this hour.  (My wind investments aren’t flying so high.  Their turn will come on another day, I guess.)  My paper company is also doing well (surprising for an industry in decline).  Over time I’m working my way through my 401k stock ,gradually replacing investments.  I’m moving out of companies that are contrary to my personal beliefs (usually regarding the environment, not always) even when it means earning less in my 401k.  Yes, I’m self righteous and smug about it.

Students for Solar Schools

The Students for Solar Schools initiative is a purely student-run
campaign to engage schools in the renewable energy movement. Plain and
simple, SSS works towards getting solar panels on school campuses for
environmental, economic, and educational benefits. The very first
school that SSS will work with is Westlake High School in Westlake
Village, California.

If you build it they will come

Well somebody has to be first, so here I go.

This isn't going to cost you a dime. It's a forum to add your ideas. I want to know what you would put into YOUR plan for a NET ZERO home or commercial building. Totally free of dependancy on outside energy.

Windows and Doors. No more aluminum. It's the best conductor of heat.

Thanks for the opportunity, Tom

Since she was four years old Emily Cummins has been creating very
useful and eco friendly products inside her grandfather’s potting shed.
Her interest in helping Third World Countries led her to create a
portable solar fridge that can keep perishables cool for days at a
temperature of 6c.

So,
how did Emily get this idea?
