I just wash mine on normal
I just wash mine on normal with a single rinse. I don't soak them (with or without bleach) to try to make them really white, I just need them clean enough to use.
Why not just hand wash them
Why not just hand wash them altogether, or just wash them once, I don't think I've ever had a problem where my clothes didn't come out as clean as desired.
And they're socks do they really need to be ultra bright white?
How About None of the Above?
I am not sure that I can vote for any option that contains bleach and/or hot water--the former is not good and the latter is not necessary. Many companies--most notably 7th Generation who is a partner on this site--offer concentrated detergents that are designed to work very well in cold water. Check these options out and you might find something that is both good for your dirty socks and the Planet.
