A Smart Solution in New Hampshire

Despite the recent drop in gas prices, there is no doubt that home heating will be an expensive proposition again this year for those of us using home heating oil. Some states will feel the pressure more than others of course, and New Hampshire has one of the higher heating bills.

Waste not, want not, say many New Hampshire residents, as large scale programs exist to recycle used motor oil as heating oil. Of 234 New Hampshire towns, an estimated 208 have programs in place to collect and recycle used motor oil. The oil has to be cleaned of course, but even still this process results in big savings.

Many towns take all of the oil from town vehicles and use it to heat town buildings. For example, in the town of Derry, the vehicle maintenance facility is heated with oil from the town's police cars, fire trucks, and snow plows.

This is a classic example of getting more from less, and I really admire the spirit behind this movement. If you live in a Northern state, do a little investigating to find out if your town has a program like this. If it doesn't, consider suggesting it or even rallying support for the idea.
