10 Green Cleaning Products You Easily Make At Home

Green up your spring (or year round) cleaning with these simple homemade home cleaners sans the toxic chemicals

There's no need to buy all kinds of fancy, and sometimes expensive, cleaning sprays or liquids to clean up your home. You can make most cleaning products from ingredients that you already have or ones that you can buy in bulk for cheap.

Not only will these concoctions save you green, but they are also green as well because they don't have any of toxic ingredients that most cleaners have.

Bathtub and Shower Cleaner Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a cup of distilled white vinegar. Use this to wipe down that soap scum or caked in residue. Extra green points if you use an old t-shirt to wipe down the tub.

Drain Cleaner Boil up a pot of water. While it's boiling sprinkle a 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain and chase it with 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar. Once the water is done boiling, pour it down the drain.

Clean Oily Pots and Pans When making your morning coffee be sure to save those coffee grinds. You can reuse them to soak up the oil in pots and pans. Just take a handful and rub them around. They will help to soak up the oils.

Dishwashing Soap Add equal parts of Dr. Bronner's soap and distilled white vinegar with a splash of hydrogen peroxide to a bottle with some water. Squeeze in some fresh lemon or an essential oil of your choice to freshen up the smell.

Clean and Disinfect Your Cutting Board Rub some baking soda into your cutting board. Spray it down with distilled white vinegar and a squeeze of fresh lemon. Let it set in for 10-15 minutes. Wipe down with warm water. For those tough stains, reuse a piece of aluminum foil to scrub the board.

Fabric Softener Pour 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar into the washing machine when doing your laundry. No need to buy a separate fabric softener.

Ant Deterrent Another use for those old coffee grinds is to use them to deter any ants that you may have. Just put a line of grinds where you think they are coming from and the ants won't cross it.

Air Freshener The simplest way to make an air freshener is to put lemon rinds into a pot of boiling water. If you are cleaning another room, you can move the steaming pot into the room that needs the freshening.

Glass and Mirror Cleaner Put 1 1/2 cups of water, 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar and 1/4 of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Squeeze in fresh lemon if you want or some essential oils. Spray on glass and wipe down. Extra green points (and less streaks) if you use a sheet of newspaper to wipe down the glass.

Stove Burner Cleaner This is to clean the burners not the stove top. Sprinkle baking soda on the affected areas and spray with an even mixture of water and distilled white vinegar. Wipe clean. For those caked on oily areas, reuse a piece of aluminum foil to really scrub it down.

Bonus: Laundry Detergent I just came across this recipe yesterday to make your own laundry detergent. It's a bit more involved than the ones listed above, but might be worth the time.

Those are some simple ways to make your own green cleaning products. Most of them use the same ingredients, so you can save money by buying them in bulk. You can change up the scents by using different essential oils such as lavendar, cinnamon, clove or eucalyptus.
