Lessons from Antarctica
This past March/April, I had the incredible privilege and honor to participate in an expedition to Antarctica, hosted by British Petroleum and led by polar explorer, Robert Swan. This expedition created a unique opportunity to engage climate scientists, business leaders, youth leaders, and polar experts to come together in unprecedented collaboration to better understand the roles we play as individual citizens, as members of corporations and universities, and as active community leaders regarding climate change and the growing vulnerability of our natural resources and ecosystems. And the Antarctic continent was INCREDIBLY inspiring for its sheer beauty, size and fragility. But being a part of this expedition also came with responsibility - to take action - and at a minimum to share this experience with others. So I did. And it was during my first slide show that sparked what follows, and what I’d like to share with you. At the end of my talk the room was silent…until the first person spoke up and simply asked: “So now what do I do?” Good question. Actually, it was the perfect question. In the words of Robert Swan: “The greatest threat to the planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” That someone else is me, you, us. So jump in anywhere and keep exploring. It really can be that easy. Offer up additional sites and suggestions and let’s insure that “There is no Finish Line”! Thanks Nike! 10 Things You Can Do… 1. Calculate your carbon footprint.
