Feel the Wood: Watches in the Age of Sexy Sustainability

Stand out from the crowd with a unique wooden watch and help plant a forest at the same time!

WeWood watches bear a superficial resemblance to popular luxury watches, but in design only. The comparison ends there, as these stylish watches are made from beautiful natural woods, without any of the usual energy-intensive metals or toxic materials.

A WeWOOD watch is a trendy fashion accessory and a lifestyle statement, enabling you to wear your preference for natural and organic materials on your wrist. The watches come in two styles, with your choice of four types of wood for each one: Maple, black Ebony, "Guaiaco" (from South America), and "Red Wing Celtis".

According to the company, the Red Wing Celtis wood used in their watches comes from salvaged wood from flooring material waste, and WeWood uses no stains, dyes, or other toxic chemicals on the woods.

But why would anyone want to manufacture watches out of wood?

"For starters, wood is recyclable, biodegradable, and can last for centuries. When it is no longer needed, it can be returned to Earth. Since processing wood requires smaller amounts of fossil fuels than processing other materials, such as steel and concrete, it releases much less CO2. Wood also retains its ability to bind CO2 even after being used in homes and buildings, and in WeWOOD's case, fashion accessories. Add that to the fact that for every tree used, ten more are planted in its place and you've got the science behind The WeWOOD Way."

Right now, WeWood watches and American Forests' Global ReLeaf will plant a tree for every watch purchased, helping to grow new forests in ecosystem restoration projects. Considering the small amount of wood in each watch, planting a new tree for each purchase will go a long way toward offsetting the loss of any trees for manufacturing purposes.

When I first saw these watches, I thought that they were in fact 100% wood, but it turns out that the watches use the popular Miyota movement to keep time, not a wooden component.

"WEWOOD lets us rediscover nature in its beauty, its simplicity and inspired design. It reminds us of a tree’s powerful way of life; rooted, yet reaching. Completely absent of artificial and toxic materials, the WEWOOD Timepiece is as natural as your wrist. It respects your skin as you respect nature by choosing it. Your WEWOOD Watch breathes the same air that you breathe and may awaken memories from another time and place. Your WEWOOD Watch records your sensations and shares your experiences as the perfect natural mate, whose story also becomes yours to wear, smell and feel."
