Hollywood may be known as having a dirty reputation, but who knew that among the glitz and glam, Hollywood practices being green?
Since the 70s, Hollywood film studios have been involved in waste reduction by reusing and recycling sets. Members of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and the Solid Waste Task Force which includes: Disney, Fox, CBS, ABC, NBC, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, and Paramount Pictures all together prevented 57% of studio sets and other solid waste from going to landfills.
They saved 65,497 metric tons of greenhouse gases, or roughly the same as removing 14,176 cars from the roads.
Each production company also does its own thing for environment, as well. CBS increased their recycling by 30% while Disney powers 400,000k of energy after they installed solar arrays in their Burbank parking lot that are supposed to power Disney with energy for 25 years.
NBC also installed solar panels that produce clean energy and FOX has carefully tracked its carbon footprint within its DVD sales. Paramount offers community green events like tree planting and e-cycling and redesigned in-store DVD displays that saved 2.2 million pounds of corrugate.
That each of these major production companies has made an effort to be green is impressive, and is a nice relief from the usual parade of bad behavior we often see from some of the folks in Hollywood.
