Day 3 Unity to Skowhegan Maine and Grassland Organic Farm

Grassland Organic Farm

I am going to keep this one pretty short and light and if you would like to see the pictures from today’s activities you can find them here: http://greenopolis.com/follownathan/photos I am honestly pretty tired at this point. I suppose that is what happens when you ride 34 miles and have a full day of learning and exploring with little time for relaxation.

This morning started off grand with a nice dose of coffee and a complimentary breakfast fit for a king thanks to Carol in Unity. I was sad to leave Unity however I was extremely excited to get to Skowhegan and visit the Grassland Organic Farm http://www.grasslandorganicfarm.com/

The ride was roughly 34 miles and was the complete contrary from my ride from Belfast to Unity. I was blessed with mid 60’s, blue skies, mostly wide shoulders and only a few large hills. It was very ideal and I am pretty sure I smiled 90% of the way. At one point I even started asking for directions just to hear people speak with that wicked New England accent!

I spent most of the day watching and learning from Garin who was milking the cows on his beautiful organic farm owned by him and his wife Sarah and their beautiful children. I could go on and on for hours about the information he both demonstrated and articulated today (and I will in a blog in the near future) however in a nutshell I am going to say that the most important thing I learned here at Grassland thus far is that they care about their animals and farming practices in the same manner in which one would care for a family member and I think that people need to understand a bit more how that translates and equates to their local community. When these hard working folks are working dreadful hours and in extreme temperatures most folks wouldn’t fathom going outside and walking to the car… They are working to the bone and putting healthy dairy, produce and organic food on the plates for your family. Sure buying organic is more expensive. However if you would have seen what I saw today I know in my heart you would understand the investment and the care that is put into producing these healthy products. Most importantly I learned a plethora of knowledge today and I spent a great day with an honest, hardworking farmer that wants to make impact.

I must now retire and “hit the hay” My dinner conversation was one that makes your brain swell from perspective. And I even got to get my hands dirty today… I am exhausted.

Until next time… Take care… and take action.
