Follow Nathan: Gearing Up for the Rocky Mountains

Aug 31, 2009

After a long and very hilly 41 mile ride from Miles City, MT in the
absolutely dreadful heat I arrived in Forsyth, MT in less that 4 hours.
I suppose I am getting pretty strong at this point. Forsyth is a small
town with great history and still thrives on the railroad that runs
parallel to route 12 and of course the mighty Yellowstone River. With
heavy winds and possible thunderstorms moving in I decided to get to
find a reasonably priced hotel and I was successful at the historic
Howdy Hotel on Main ST. I find it fairly interesting when I think back
to the fancy resort I was staying in while in Lake Placid or the
beautiful home where I spent the night while in the Shaker Heights
neighborhood of Cleveland Ohio. As I look out the window and watch the
trains going by and I hear the railroad workers laughing loud and
heading to the the cafe for big meals... I think to myself... Man this
is the heart of the west west. This is Montana!

As of now I am in Eastern Montana full of hot sun and cattle
ranches where you don't see a town and at some points another person
for miles and miles. And while the hills are getting increasingly
bigger and more difficult I can only imagine what biking across the
mighty continental divide is going to bring. I imagine it will be
equally as beautiful as it is challenging. I honestly enjoy climbing
these hills and there is very much a part of me that is 100% looking
forward to the experience. I am about to embark on the Rocky mountains
and all its beauty and wildness on a bicycle. I will not have the
luxury of speeding up those hills with a push of the gas pedal on route
94. I will be exposed to the elements and I will rely solely on my
determination and will power.

The next few hundred miles should be an interesting stretch through
Roundup and into Missoula where I am hoping to find people who are
proactive in regards to environmental stewardship and conservation. I
leave you now with miles ahead of me and a very optimistic feeling
inside. Wish me luck!

Until next time take care and take action!
