During my last post I was at the Waverly cafe en route to Litchfield,
MN and after a long hard day of biking in tremendous headwinds I did in
fact arrive. At first glance I was sort of concerned about both a place
to stay and also a decent place to eat. As you can imagine I still try
and do my best in the way of eating foods that are not harmful to both
my body and the environment... however I must confess that here in the
heart of the Midwest the options are simply limited. So I do what I
can.
When I got to Litchfield I asked a woman who had been walking her dog
where I might find a decent bite to eat and a campground where I could pitch my tent and she sent
me to Peter's on Lake Ripley. And she was right. Not only was the food
great and reasonably priced but the people there were very friendly and
a kind woman offered to pay for my dinner in appreciation of my ride and efforts.
As I was leaving the owner Pete asked me to get a picture with him
and my bike and I happily agreed. And just as I thought the day could
not get any better another gentlemen gave me a few bucks and said "
this is for your campsite tonight". I thought wow... what they say
about the people here in the Midwest really is true. These people are
extremely kind and generous.
The next morning I woke up and headed for Benson, MN where I had no
plans and certainly did not have anyone lined up to take me in. When I
arrived after a very long hot day of biking in the headwinds I went to
Duffy's where I was eager to grab a bite to eat. Within 5
minutes a wonderful married couple (the Thielke family) offered to take
me in and we enjoyed a night full of laughs and stories. This was truly
a highlight in the journey thus far and another prime example as to how
wonderful the people here in America really are.
That night a few severe thunderstorms had rolled into Minnesota and I
got a first hand look at what extreme weather looks like in the
Midwest. The worst of the storm had missed Benson however I could
certainly see what was happening around us for miles and miles. I was
very grateful for their hospitality and I was glad to have a roof over
my head.
I woke up this morning and headed west on route 12 where there was no
shoulder and not a town in between Benson and Ortonville, MN for 42 long and peaceful miles. It was truly
heaven. I was finally alone on my bike with no people or cars for . No
longer was I fascinated by the people around me... I had become fascinated
with my own thoughts. And after riding a bicycle from Maine to South
Dakota... I have plenty of thoughts and I plan to share them all in
very expicit detail in the future. This my friends is what I have been waiting for.
I have just arrived here in Milbank, SD and after an attempt to find a
place to stay with suprisingly no luck I am checked into a motel. With the current severe storms pending I
decided it would be best to get a motel on the outskirts of town. Most
of you know this is not my first choice of places I would like to
stay... but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. So I leave you now to study the map and see what the rest of the vast wild west has to offer me.
Until next time take care and take action!
