5 Ways to Recycle an Old Garden Hose

Read about 5 innovative and creative ways to reuse a garden hose instead of throwing it away!

Spring is on its way, and that means it’s time for people to put away the snow shovels and bring out their gardening tools!  You can’t have a good garden without a proper garden hose, so if yours is torn, tattered or just plain unusable, try recycling it when you get a new one.  You may be surprised at just how many creative things you can build with an old hose.

We’ve shared a few ways to recycle your old garden hose, including LiteGreen’s post Fido Feels the Love with Homemade Doggie Toys and Joe Laur’s post Life is Just a Tire Swing, or; Everything, but here are 5 more very impressive and eco-friendly ways to turn that old garden hose into a fabulous new design:

1. Make a Bucket Grip

Just by slipping a piece of hose over a metal handle you’ll be able to get a much better grip on what you’re carrying.

2. Capture Pesky Earwigs

According to an article in Reader’s Digest: “Cut the hose into 12-inch (30-centimeter) lengths, making sure the inside is completely dry. Place the hose segments where you have seen earwigs crawling around and leave them overnight. By the morning the hoses should be filled with the earwigs and ready for disposal.”

3. Toothguard for a Handsaw

First you measure the length of your blade, and then cut a piece of garden hose one inch longer than what you just measured. Slice the hose down the middle and slide it over the blade!

4. Garden Hose Wreath

This article from TwoHeartsTogether.com shows you how to make a beautiful wreath from a garden hose and other recycled materials.

5. Garden Hose Furniture

Designer Chase DeForest reshapes and repurposes old garden hoses into cool furniture pieces like this chair!

Finally, if you’re not interested in recycling your hose using one of the above ways, you can always blend it! (I personally suggest that you NOT do this.)
