Artist Mikal Hameed’s Recycled Stereo Masterpieces

Mikal Hameed “Jazzes” Up His Artwork with Recycled Stereo Equipment

“Music is part of us, and it helps us stay connected to the earth and to the universe.” That’s what artist Mikal Hameed, a son of two jazz musicians who was raised in South Central Los Angeles, says about his art, which combines his love of music with his desire to creatively transform reclaimed materials.

I absolutely agree with Mikal, because if it’s our mission to protect the earth in order to survive, we should do it while happily listening to some awesome tunes, right? Even Snow White’s Seven Dwarves “whistled while they worked,” and look at how productive they were!

Although Mikal admits that he originally started artistically transforming other people’s waste out of necessity and cost effectiveness, he soon realized that his work was connecting people through their love of music and their desire to live a sustainable lifestyle. This used “stuff” was not only reducing land waste, but it was also forming a bond between a community of music lovers, and that’s what intensified his passion to create amazing pieces of art.

Like this piece, which is made from a reclaimed office chair and old stereo equipment. The best part: it’s actually a fully functioning sound system!

You can see an entire gallery of artwork on Mikal’s website.

Come on, if you won’t burst into song and dance for thinking that Mikal is one of the coolest artists alive, at least give him some credit for putting a De La Soul album on the chair! If you still need some convincing, watch this video that shows Mikal talking about his musical masterpieces. I’m sure that he’ll convince to you sing a different tune.
