Inspired by the hit movie Back to the Future II, this real-life hoverboard is powered by electromagnets!
Images: nilsguadagnin.blogspot.com I always loved watching Marty McFly ride a hoverboard in the film Back to the Future II. The futuristic hoverboard was a much cooler version of a skateboard, only without wheels. It “hovered” above the ground as Marty propelled himself through the air. After seeing the movie most people hoped that the hoverboard would become a real-life object, but 21 years later it still had not come to be…until now.
Oh yes, it’s a real-life hoverboard designed by French artist Nils Guadagnin. Guadagnin designed the board for a 2008 exhibit titled, wait for it….Back to the Future. The board utilizes a built-in electromagnetic system that levitates the board while a laser system stabilizes the board in the air. The artist says this about the creation: “In the making of this work, I was thinking about different ways of presenting sculpture. In fact it's a reflection on the multiple possibilities of how to give a sculpture full spatial autonomy.”
Although it’s not sturdy enough to hold the weight of real human being, it does actually hover above the ground, which makes the entire idea cool enough for me! It gives me hope that one day we’ll all be hovering above the ground instead of burning gas for transportation.
