Green For All Foundation Celebrates Clean Energy, Hip Hop Culture and Black History Month

Find out how this green organization promotes clean energy and hip hop music to black youth in America.

I’m a big fan of Black History Month for two main reasons: 1) The month recognizes the political, scientific and social contributions of amazing black Americans and 2) February is the perfect month to celebrate positive hip hop music created by black musicians.  I love the entire month of February because I can pay tribute to influential black Americans in history like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Duke Ellington, Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglass, Run DMC and a certain 44th President of the United States.  But I also like to support influential organizations like the Green For All Foundation.

The Green For All Foundation is a national organization that works towards building a green and clean economy for all Americans, but it has a special place in its heart for black youth living in collapsing urban communities.  The foundation believes that a new “green economy” would not only promote positive change in the environment, but it would also create millions of quality green jobs for inner-city youth.  These youth would be properly trained in recycling, waste management and conservation methods, and that means they will keep their communities healthy and green.

Check out this amazing video that was produced for Green For All:

The Green For All foundation is great because it promotes green efforts in urban communities, but it also infuses a passion for hip hop music into some of its campaigns. An example is the Green the Block campaign, which is a partnership between the Green For All Foundation and the Hip Hop Caucus, an organization whose mission is “to organize young people in urban communities to be active in elections, policymaking, and service projects, as a means to address and end urban poverty for future generations.”  The Hip Hop Caucus reaches these young people through the promotion of hip hop culture, celebrities, music, media and grassroots organizing.

The Green for All Foundation partnered with the Hip Hop Caucus to work on 3 main goals for the Green the Block campaign:

1. To educate and raise awareness within communities of color about the need for and benefits of a clean-energy economy.

2. To furnish communities of color with the tools, skills, and capital to be active, succeed, and play a leadership role in the clean-energy economy.

3. To build a foundation within communities of color for sustained employment, entrepreneurship, and wealth in the clean-energy economy.

And the goals will all be reached with a little help from the hip hop community.

The campaign kicked off in Washington DC on September 2, 2009.  Here’s a video of the historic event that features a few very prominent black hip hop artists:

Yes, it’s Black History Month and we should recognize inspirational organizations like the Green For All Foundation, but we should continue to support them long after the month of February is over.  Let’s support the green movement and great music together!
