New York Artist Edina Tokodi Creates Animal-Inspired Moss Graffiti!

Wander around the streets of Brooklyn, New York and you’ll find beautiful graffiti made with moss!

Green graffiti is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Instead of using toxic paint or sprays, some artists choose to make a statement with natural materials, as we’ve seen before in our past post Spread the Word…with Mud! Well, instead of using mud, Hungary-born artist Edina Tokodi gets her graffiti groove on… with moss!

Why would someone want to make a statement with moss graffiti? In an article in Inhabitat she says, “I think that our distance from nature is already a cliché. City dwellers often have no relationship with animals or greenery. As a public artist I feel a sense of duty to draw attention to deficiencies in our everyday life.”

And draw attention she does! Edina’s moss artwork can be seen on neighborhood walls throughout Brooklyn. Stroll along the streets and you might see:

A turkey, rabbit and deer gallivanting together.

3
The rabbit’s cousin, the Hare, hanging out on the corner.

4
A moose protecting its territory.

5
Polar bears foraging for some food.

Although Edina loves animals as her artwork muses, she also creates other environmentally-inspired images. One piece, titled

Metromoss, can be found in a Brooklyn metro car:

Who wouldn’t want to see a cute, heart-shaped moss mural while riding the metro?

I would love to see graffiti like this adorning the streets of Baltimore, or anywhere else for that matter! I hope that this type of artistic expression catches on with more artists. If we can’t have real animals in our overpopulated cities, then we can at least have realistic images of them.
