Discover America’s most eco-efficient cars of the last 34 years
Popular Mechanics, one of America’s most recognized magazines on science and technology, recently released a list of its top 5 “Retro Eco-Supercars” in the country. Since the EPA began tracking gas mileage in cars in 1975, these 5 cars have been consistently at the top of the list in fuel efficiency and popularity.
Let’s see if you recognize any of these:
1. All-Time Stingiest: Honda Insight
It was the first hybrid electric vehicle on the market, and it’s still the most fuel-efficient.

2. Best Non-Hybrid: Chevy Sprint
Engineered by Suzuki, this non-hybrid vehicle won the fuel economy title from 1986-1988.

3. One for the Truck Lovers: VW Rabbit Pickup
This cool car, which features an “E” light on the dashboard that tells you when to shift for better fuel economy, gets great city gas mileage.

4. Geo Whiz: Geo Metro XFI
This very affordable and extremely reliable car has been reported by some owners to get up to 60 mpg on the highway.

5. Original Champ, Still Contending: Honda Civic
This car was the EPA’s first ever fuel-efficient champ in 1975, and since then its many versions continue to get an estimated 40 mpg.
