Chinese people consume over 2-3 million tons of cooking oil a year. That’s a whole lot of oil being used in one of the most populated countries in the world. According to an article in the New York Times, State Food and Drug Administration regulators recently discovered that some Chinese restaurants were recycling their cooking oil, but not in an eco-friendly and healthy way. The restaurants have been using what is known as “drainage oil,” and this recycled cooking oil is tainted with other kitchen waste and can be extremely hazardous to humans.
Pretty scary, right? Just watch this video from NTDWorld News to find out more about this recent discovery:
Here are a few images that show proof of this illegal activity. Warning: may cause you to cringe in disgust!
In conclusion, here’s a small rehash of the facts:
One in ten Chinese restaurants use discarded cooking oil (some of which has been scraped from sewage drains).
Street vendors sell this illegal cooking oil because it’s cheap to refine and costs half as much as normal cooking oil
A harmful chemical found in recycled oil is aflatoxin, which is a cancer causing agent. It’s 100 times more toxic than arsenic.
These recent findings have sparked a “cooking oil crackdown” by the Chinese government, who hopes to put an end to this horrific activity. Do you think it’s possible to end this illegal practice completely?
