Posters Help Speed Plastiki Onward!

If you’ve not heard of the Plastiki, now’s the time to find out. This amazing craft is crafted entirely out of “disposable” plastic bottles. I say “disposable” in quotes because it really is indisposable - plastic hangs around a very long time. Which is a plus for reusing time and again, eventually making durable goods like computer housing, car parts and building materials for it. But it’s bad for a “throw it away” mentality, especially since “away” has gone away.

David de Rothschild currently is on his way to raise awareness for the plastic floating around the Pacific Garbage Patch. He's sailing from San Francisco across the Pacific Ocean to Sydney, a journey of over 7,000 miles, on the Plastiki, a boat made from 12,500 2-liter soda bottles. We’ve written about it here on Greenopolis before.

Our friends at Treehugger recently ran a lovely spread featuring ingenious posters that not only cheer the Plastiki on its voyage with potent messages, but are made from samples of the very garbage Plastiki is seeking to focus attention on. Here are a few of our favorites:

Plastic caps make up this help sign…

3

Smoking debris is the deadliest in the ocean…

4

Plastic cups - one drink and overboard….

Who needs a straw anyway? My kids just tip and spill….

This is why Greenopolis is here - to bring it back again and again…

You can see the whole slide presentation at Treehugger. I wrote a poem for the occasion, to cheer the ship on:

Sail on Plastiki, Sail on!
‘Til the flotsam and jetsam are gone!
Sail on Plastiki, over the waves
It’s not just the sea, but our planet we save.

OK, Longfellow it’s not, but it’s sincere. Follow the voyage of the Plastiki and the ocean gyres, and then recapture your stuff.
