Better Yet, Shop Online!
In the spirit of full disclosure, I came across your story because of the phrase "shoptogether," which is the brand name of one of my company's technologies. As a Prius-driving localvore, I loved your post not only for personal reasons, but also in part because it made me think of how our technology applies to the theme of your story. Instead of jumping in your car and going to the mall, sites like MattelShop.com, CharlotteRusse.com and soon Buy.com let visitors shop together with friends and family online whether they live a block away or in different countries. It's a fun way to choose the perfect gift for a niece, nephew, sister, dad, or whomever, when geography or time constraints may get in the way.
You have made some really
You have made some really good points about Christmas decoration especially the one with the lightings. Using LED lights are much better option as compared to conventional bulbs. You conserve electricity and also contribute to being 'green'. Christmas is a time for sweets and gifts, gifts for kids. I have bought some 8 marshmallow shooters for my kids, my brother's kids and my sister's only son they are all going to be playing with their own toys and no fighting that he and she has this and not me. Everyone's got the same toys so that will put an end to the quarrels.

Great ideas!
I most frequently re-gifted a home theater system I no longer needed to my son & am currently refinishing a table for my grandson's first birthday that has been in the family for generations!!
Also love the live tree idea - my family always did that when I was growing up... I need to renew the tradition!!
TreePeople
A couple years ago I started a new tradition of buying a grove of trees for my family, through TreePeople. TreePeople sends me a certificate (printed on nice recycled paper, in a recycled envelope) and I present it to my family on Christmas. My parents appreciate it because they don't need anything materials-wise, but I just can't give up on giving gifts! So voila! Earth is a little greener in their names. :-) One of these days we're going to participate in a planting day to have some fun with it.
The one I'm always practicing
The one I'm always practicing is greening your gift wrap. This year I'm using Elephant Pooh wrapping paper! Great post!
Hanukah, too!
Much of this applies to Hanukkah as well, the original 'conservation' holiday, when one days supply of renewable, biobased lamp oil (i.e. olive oil) lasted for 8 days! Not only a miracle, but a great making things last tale.
