We love our pets. They take care of us, so we want to take care of them, right? Especially when it comes to buying dog toys.
We want to give our pets quality toys that show how much we love them, but commercial toys can be expensive. And just because a toy is sold in a pet store doesn't mean it's been thoroughly tested for safety and durability; or that your pooch will even like it! Homemade dog toys may be just the answer your looking for. And chances are Fido will like your homemade toys better than anything store bought.
Make A Super Tug From Fabric Scraps
You don't have to sew to make tugs. They're one of the easiest dog toys to make. Be creative! Old sheets, jeans, t-shirts and towels make great fabric choices for this toy.
You'll need: fabric scraps
How To: Cut 27 strips, as long a possible, and make 9 braids. Braid the 9 braids again until you are left with 3 larger braids. Then braid the remaining braids into one final thick braid. Knot ends as tightly as possible so they won't come undone. Leave about 5 inches of material at the bottom unbraided for the fringe. Separate the fringe into two sections then tie a strong double knot. You can also attach a tennis ball or frisbee to the end of the tug if you want. From mevsthehouse
Recycle Your Old Garden Hose Into A Fetch Toy
Associated Content has this suggestion. Before you throw out your old garden hose, think about turning it into a great doggie fetch toy. Chances are that some length of the hose is still in good shape, so using that part of the hose, cut the hose into various sized pieces. Be sure to clean the toys throughly to remove any dirt or chemicals that might be on an old hose. (Never use sections of hose that are dried, cracked or mildewed.) They float, so they're easy to find at the lake or pool and will make great tools for training and teething pups. If your dog starts to eat the ends of the hose, it's time to take it away. Don't let your dog eat any of the hose!
Eco-Kong
If you buy your peanut butter in plastic jars your dog can have hours of fun cleaning the last smears out of the old jar. Glass jars are breakable and have the potential to injure your dog or chip his teeth, so don't use them. Make sure your dog can't get his head or jaw stuck inside the jar, and always supervise. This is a good toy for when you're watching a DVD and need a break from occupying your puppy. From Positive Petzine.
Tube Toy
Before you throw those empty paper towel rolls into the recycle bin, let Fido have them. Fill them with food and fold the ends shut. Your dog will have a terrific time figuring out how to get to the food. He can either destroy the box or tube, or you can make a hole large enough for the food to shake out. From Positive Petzine.
Apple Bob
I love this idea from ehow. Fill a large pail or bucket with water and drop a fresh apple into the water. Your dog will enjoy entertaining himself with his own game of bobbing for apples. And you don't have to worry about safety, as with some other homemade toys. If your dog destroys the apple by eating it, the only thing he'll get is a healthy treat.
