Lite Green: New Microsoft Technology Helps Consumers Use Energy Wisely

By Sebrina Smith

I think recycling really begins with using less. Use the least amount of any resource that you can get away with, then recycle and re-use what you can’t finish. (Not a surprise, my blog is called Lite Green, after all.)

So when I found out today that Microsoft is offering a new energy-monitoring app called HOHM, I was thrilled. The HOHM app will help you track your energy consumption and usage.

It’s still in the beta stage, but I have high hopes for it. It’s free, (yippeeee!) so it appeals to my eco-nomical / eco-friendly side. Money is also a resource, ya know, so I love free stuff. And I think that actively saving on your electric bill shows a certain “frugal greenness” that makes me feel just real, real, good.

Microsoft Hohm uses advanced analytics licensed from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy to provide consumers with personalized energy-saving recommendations. Microsoft Hohm looks easy-to-use and will help consumers lower their energy bill and reduce their impact on the environment.

“Microsoft Hohm demonstrates how a combination of advanced software and Internet-based services can help people track, understand and manage their personal energy usage,” said Craig Mundie, chief research and strategy officer at Microsoft.

Microsoft Hohm provides savings recommendations, which can range from placing new caulking on windows to removing air leaks to installing a programmable thermostat. These recommendations are tailored based on specific circumstances in the consumer’s home including house features, usage patterns and appliances. In addition, consumers will be able to compare their energy usage with that of others in their area and connect with the Microsoft Hohm community to find referrals and exchange ideas.

And even though savings will vary based on the information shared and the characteristics of consumers’ households, it’s still worth trying. You have almost nothing to lose, and it could end up saving you - and the environment - a bundle.

Find it at Microsoft HOHM.
