Regatta Racing Goes Green With Eco 60 Yachts

The 2010 Velux 5 Oceans Regatta is going green, thanks to the inclusion of a more affordable class of yacht.

The addition of the Eco 60 yacht class within the race is meant to open up the world of solo ocean racing to a wider range of sailors and make it more accessible to those on a limited budget. The Eco 60 class is also a more environmentally friendly option for those who might otherwise have to depend on sponsorship to enter the Velux 5 Oceans race.

The new classification will include all Open 60 yachts launched before January 2003 and is governed by specific rules and cost limits.

The Eco 60 class provides the first stepping stone for older yachts such as those built around the turn of the century. Outpaced by newer yacht models, these older, yet sturdy boats will again be able to race competitively.

"The 28-year history of this race is peppered with stories of unknown sailors of limited means who emerged to make their mark on ocean racing. Some became famous; others simply achieved their life's dream of a solo circumnavigation. We want to continue that tradition. This is what lies behind our introduction of the Eco 60 class," said race chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.

But it's not just about money - the Eco 60 class will also be governed by rules designed to improve the ecological and environmental impact of the race.

The new guidelines will limit the use of fossil fuels and encourage the use of wind and solar power.

Considering their weight and design, you might think an older boat couldn’t beat a newer, technologically superior boat. But Knox-Johnston raced an older boat to victory in 2007.

"Single handed sailing is much more in the mind than in muscles, and the history of this race shows that an older boat can often be better and more aggressively sailed than a new one," Knox-Johnston said.
