What cool eco-friendly gadgets I'd buy if I had the cash and a house.
Currently, I live in a somewhat old, not-so-updated apartment. But eventually, EVENTUALLY, I will have my own house. And, once I have my own house, I shall update it with lots of super cool, eco-friendly gadgets! (Well, providing I've actually made the above stated million dollars.)
The first thing I'd buy would be a solar cooker. Yes, an oven that cooks food (slowly) in the sun. If you recall from my previous post, they're just about the sweetest thing ever. For details on just how cool this product is, click here.
The second product I'd buy would definitely be a programmable thermostat. According to ENERGY STAR, programmable thermostats are one of the easiest ways to save energy and money. "An ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostat helps make it easy for you to save by offering four pre-programmed settings to regulate your home's temperature in both summer and winter - when you are asleep or away. The average household spends more than $2,200 a year on energy bills - nearly half of which goes to heating and cooling. Homeowners can save about $180 a year by properly setting their programmable thermostats and maintaining those settings."
I don't know about you, but I could absolutely use an extra $180 in my pocket...
The third product I'd buy would be a... (big drum roll please, because this one's just outrageous)... a wind turbine! Yes, a wind turbine. These suckers aren't just for large-scale farms anymore. Oh no, they can be suitable for homes too! The technology behind wind turbines is simple to understand: Wind spins several blades around a rotor. The rotor is connected to a main shaft that spins a generator and creates ELECTRICITY. Cool. According to Planet Green, "There are already a number of wind turbines manufactured specifically for home use. And the best part is, the US government offers a green tax credit to anyone who purchases one to help power their home. It's quite the solid break, too: when you buy and install a home wind turbine, you can write off 30% of your total expenses. Considering that home wind turbines cost between $600-$12,000, that rebate will certainly come in handy."
Yep, these ones are definitely on my to-buy list. Now, where's my wallet...
