Labor Day Labors of Love

You don’t have to be a celebrity to do something big for our planet.

Ah, Labor Day… that wonderful day of the year when most of us get to take off work and enjoy a day without, well, labor.

But what, exactly, counts as labor? Is it merely anything that is a job or task? What about those things that are technically work, but don’t feel “laborious” because we enjoy what we’re doing? Maybe those are something different. Let’s call them “labors of love.”

I think a lot of eco-conscious folks fit into this category, and I love, love, love reading about them. It’s inspiring, and reminds me that every little bit counts and that I don’t have to be a Leonardo DiCaprio.

Here are 5 everyday people who I’d like to highlight:

  1. Lori DeAngelis, Captain of Dolphin Queen Cruises. (TwoGirlsGoGreen actually highlighted her in a recent piece, along with Greenopolis’ own Melissa McGinnis. Check it out here.) Lori has been helping the local dolphin population in her area (the Gulf) move away from the oil spill. (Photo credit to Dolphin Queen Cruises.)

  2. Mike Lieberman, eco-warrior, blogger, gardener, and all around cool dude. Mike’s perfected the art of growing organic herbs and vegetables from his balcony (and previously a fire escape). He regularly writes about his experiences and you can follow his adventures by clicking this link. (Photo credit to Mike Lieberman.)

  3. Jill, creator of Living Earth Beauty. I follow this lovely lady on Twitter, and I always enjoy reading her tidbits on life and living as healthy as possible. She’s got some great stuff, and her story is inspiring. Spend some time on her site – you won’t be disappointed.
  4. Nathan A. Winters, author and cyclist. This dude is the bomb – I love reading his updates and travel adventures. He’s basically biked across the country and discovered lots about our agricultural system. Good stuff.
  5. My mommy! My mom grew up on a farm, and has always been a proponent of growing and storing your own food. Need something canned? She’s on it. And when it comes to recycling, she’s a pro! In fact, because my parents live out in the country and in a town where there’s no recycling facility, they keep everything and then take it with them to the recycling facility in a city an hour away. Way to go!

Everyday folks rock. Who would you like to highlight? Call them out and give them props in our comment section or Facebook page.

Keep the positivity flowing!
