Anvil Knitwear Unveils New Eco Tee
Anvil Knitwear today launched a new eco t-shirt made from recycled PET plastic bottles and transitional cotton, which has been grown on farms that are in the process of becoming certified organic. Named the AnvilSustainable(TM) tee, the shirt is debuting at the MAGIC Marketplace apparel trade show in Las Vegas.
"The AnvilSustainable(TM) tee was designed to support two important environmental initiatives: the recycling of plastic bottles and the conversion of acreage from conventional cotton farming to organic cotton farming," said Anthony Corsano, Anvil's CEO. "Each AnvilSustainable(TM) tee uses approximately three 20-ounce recycled PET plastic bottles, and the cotton comes from farms that are in the three-year process of transitioning to organic. Buying a shirt made with cotton in conversion is a great way to support farmers making the switch, and encourage more to do the same."
Anvil Knitwear is the largest domestic purchaser of U.S.-grown certified organic cotton and was ranked by the Organic Exchange as being the sixth-largest purchaser of organic cotton worldwide in 2008.
In addition to the AnvilSustainable(TM) tee, Anvil's eco collection is comprised of 15 environmentally friendly t-shirts, fleeces and bags, including the AnvilOrganic(R) line made with 100 percent organic cotton. The AnvilRecycled(TM) tee, made from 69 percent pre-consumer recycled cotton, is certified CarbonFree(R) by Carbonfund.org and was the first carbon-neutral recycled cotton t-shirt on the market.
The AnvilSustainable(TM) tee along with the entirety of Anvil's eco-friendly line can be purchased at www.buyanvil.com (for individual consumer purchases) or through Anvil distributors (for wholesale purchases). See www.anvilknitwear.com for a list of distributors. Anvil's booth at MAGIC will be located in the North Hall in the Eco section (booth number E-73000-9), and Anvil will have a presence in the WRAP Pavilion in the Sourcing section of the show.

This is a great program and a great product.
I've got one of these shirts- it is soft and stretchy- I love it. I was concerned at first that blending cotton and PET would make the shirt non-recyclable. But it wears longer than cotton alone, can obviously be reused as cleaning cloth at the end of it's life, and most importantly, the use of recycled PET in the shirt brings the cost structure down enough to help support farmers transitioning to organic- they can be paid the premium price they need to make the transition, while keeping the cost of the shirt within reach for the average Joe- or Liv.
I really applaud Anvil as an "old line" company- over 130 years- that is reinventing itself as a sustainable player in a new era. Just like nature adapts to the current environment.
We're proud to have them as a partner on Greenopolis!
Love,
Liv
