The demand for green building professionals is sharply rising as eco-friendly, energy efficient homes become more of a market norm than a market novelty.
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) said more than 1,000 builders, remodelers and others in the industry have sought and earned certification through the organization's Certified Green Professional (CGP) program since its launch in February.
"Of course we expected the CGP to be popular, because as green building grows, many consumers are looking for a builder with real credentials in today's market," said NAHB President Sandy Dunn, a second-generation home builder in Point Pleasant, W. Va. "Nevertheless, this is phenomenal growth. The home building industry clearly sees the value of this designation and consumers will, as well."
The 66-year-old organization has long provided professional development and industry education opportunities, said NAHB spokeswoman Calli Schmidt. The trade group added green building curriculum to its offerings two years ago and established its credential program six months ago in response to builders' demands, she said.
"It's just taken off — builders want to be ready for the next big thing," said Schmidt, who added that the NAHB National Green Building Program website includes information and resources for property owners who want to learn more about environmentally friendly homes. "It goes much better for everyone if the builders are educated and the consumer is educated as well."
The organization maintains an online directory of professionals who have completed the credentialing program. The trade group's CGP designation is effective for three years, after which holders must complete a educational update program to renew their credentials. |
