Oct. 9. 2008 - Pepsi Bottling Group saved 16,000 tons of plastic last year via new bottle designs and manufacturing processes (millions of pounds from Aquafina bottles alone), according to the company's first-ever sustainability report.

The report outlines the advancements PBG is making across its environmental, employee and community programs. Key highlights include:

  • 300 million gallons of water conserved per year as a result of new technology and process improvements.
  • Over the past three years, PBG has now saved 74 million pounds of plastic on its Aquafina bottles alone.
  • Efficiency of new, lighter-weight PBG trucks up 11%.
  • The company’s U.S. offset 100% of its electricity needs through the purchase of renewable energy certificates.
  • An estimated 83% of the PBG waste stream is recycled.
  • Recipient of the 2007 C. Everett Koop National Health Award for efforts to promote healthy lifestyles among PBG employees.
  • More than $16 million in financial and product donations to families and community organizations in need.

Pepsi has also recently launched two websites encouraging its customers to get in on the green act. Its PepsiRecycling, and PepsiEcoChallenge sites are designed to communicate the company’s environmental responsibility as well as promote recycling with visitors.
