August 18th, 2009 - Start thinking about commercial recycling as if it were mining. Plastics recycling pioneer Michael Biddle does, and his company (MBA Polymers) is on the cutting edge. In an interview with Sustainable Life Media’s Betsy Rosenberg, Biddle lays out the challenges of reusing plastics, and the big business opportunities he sees on the horizon.

MBA Polymers was founded in 1994 by Dr. Michael Biddle and Mr. Trip Allen to do better research in plastics recovery and to develop a commercial system for recovering and reselling plastics. There’s no reason for perfectly good materials to go to the landfill, and as “mining” materials from broken coffeepots is certainly easier than blasting from big holes in the ground, it can be profitable too, provided someone with ingenuity comes up with ways to manage the complex streams of materials.
