Oct. 9. 2008 - Tech services firm Redemtech has launched a sustainable computing initiative designed to help large companies reduce the environmental impact of their IT systems.
The company is launching the initiative in conjunction with the publication of a related whitepaper, Beyond Power: IT's Roadmap to Sustainable Computing co-produced by Redemtech and IDC.
The aim of the initiative is to promote reducing the introduction of e-waste into the disposal stream through encouraging the delay of procuring new technology by extending equipment lifecycles; reusing electronic equipment through redeployment, either through resale or in charitable donation; and ensuring responsible recycling.
"Combining refurbishment services and procurement of model stock used equipment with normal asset recovery processes can be an effective strategy to yield optimal results," says author, David Doud in the report.
Efforts of the initiative include:
- A self-assessment so organizations can quickly audit lifecycle management practices to identify opportunities to achieve the greatest reductions in environmental impact.
- Working with the U.S. Government Accounting Office to call attention to practices by some recycling companies that are dumping e-waste overseas.
- Working with the Basel Action Network (BAN) to develop and support higher standards for e-waste recycling.
- Release of computer lifecycle cost analysis that reveals savings of $325-$650 for every $1,000 in original cost by extending lifecycles to four or five years.
Companies are realizing the importance and the burden of disposing of their electronic waste. But it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom, says David MacDonald president and CEO of Softchoice. "The good news is that there are ways to turn the asset disposal process into a simple, repeatable and in some cases profitable experience," he says.
