Sprint Announces Green Phone “Reclaim”
August 10th, 2009 - "Reclaim" is the new phone by Samsung and Sprint that has a range of new features in the materials, packaging, and accessories. With a set of beyond-the-basics functionalities, it aims for a slightly different market than other "green" phones have gone after so far.
The casing is made with 40% corn based bio plastics and the phone comes standard with an energy-efficient charger. The box and phone tray are made with recycled materials, and the user manual is now an online resource instead of a thick booklet. Reducing the packaging also reduces the shipping size and weight, which impacts the greenhouse gas emissions related to transporting the phone.
Sprint also says that 80% of the phone is recyclable, an effort which is consistent in light of their February target of recycling or reusing 90% of their phones by 2017. Whereas the green model "Renew" by Motorola is a simple phone, the "Reclaim" also has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, GPS, internet access, bluetooth capability, and applications for MySpace, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. Available next week for $50.
