Taiheiyo Introduces Energy-Saving Cement

Oct. 6, 2008 - A Philipines-based company has launched an alternative cement brand that requires less energy during production - and costs less, too.

Taiheiyo Cement Philippines Inc.’s (TCPI), Grand Premium concrete is a cleaner alternative to Portland Cement, the most common type of concrete used on most construction sites around the world. The wide use of traditional Portland Cement has been criticized for the large amounts of CO2 that are emitted during its manufacture.

The production of cement involves grinding down a material known as clinker which releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere during the process. Traditional Portland cement comprises 95% of clinker while the TCPI’s new Grand Premium only comprises up to 75% of the raw material. With less clinker in the mix, the production of Grand Premium cement will consume less energy, emit less carbon dioxide, and incur less costs to produce while at the same time, meeting American standard requirements for cement, the company says.

Greener construction materials are being warmly welcomed by the industry. According to a recent survey of industry leaders, the number of businesses greening their facilities will jump 23% over the next five years.
