August 14, 2009 -Toyota Motor Corp., in an effort to remain on top in fuel efficient vehicles, will offer a new hybrid vehicle in the U.S., Europe and Japan that is more fuel efficient than the Prius.

The Yomiuri newspaper reports that the vehicle will be based on Toyota's Vitz model and will be launched in 2011. The vehicle will get approximately 90 miles per gallon, significantly better than the 3rd generation Prius.

Toyota has been on top of the fuel efficient automotive world since they launched the Prius in 1997, and have since sold more than 1.25 million units. Recently, Honda has launched the Insight to challenge the 3rd generation Prius' dominance in this market, and GM recently announced the Volt 2010 model, which by EPA standards gets 230 miles per gallon.
