UPS Nixes Paper Sorting Labels

Nov. 14, 2008 - UPS has collaborated with Hewlett-Packard to develop a new paper-saving handheld device that prints sorting labels directly on packages.

The wireless device, called the HP Handheld sp400 All-in-One, enables UPS employees to download sorting instructions by scanning shipping labels. The device then prints those instructions directly onto the package.

UPS has introduced All-in-Ones in 41 U.S. package centers, with plans to deploy a total of 850 devices in 55 centers by the end of the year. The company expects that, when fully deployed, the All-in-One will save more than 1,300 tons of paper and millions of dollars each year.

The All-in-One is being used in conjunction with UPS's Package Flow Technology system for route optimization. The system, noted for eliminating lefthand turns to shorten delivery routes, also generates package-handling instructions that help loaders pack delivery trucks more efficiently.

"Leveraging technology innovation is critical in today's tough, competitive economy," said Dave Barnes, senior vice president and CIO of UPS. "The new HP handheld device means increased efficiency and effectiveness at a lower cost, with less waste. This is a perfect example of how technology helps to drive business solutions at UPS."
