Not the Last Straw
Greenopolis Thought LeaderGreenopolis Founder

Today is my birthday and my husband invited me out for lunch. I picked P.F. Chang’s Chinese Bistro because it’s just around the corner and on the route for errands we'd be running. Never having been there before, I had no particular expectations other than being pretty sure there would be rice, vegetables and chop sticks.

The passion fruit tea smelled really good. I brought it up to my lips and took a whiff a couple of times, almost slurping some . . . but . . . I just couldn’t do it.

To Go Boxes
Greenopolis Thought Leader

Saturday I went to a wedding.  The dinner was sit down style with a ton of food on each plate.  I was shocked when the serves came around with to go boxes for the guests to take home the leftovers.  This was a very fancy wedding!  I have never seen such a thing.  When I said something to the wait staff they said it reduces the amount of food that goes to waste.  However, these were styrofoam boxes! » read more

20 Years Congrats Seventh Generation
Greenopolis Thought LeaderGreenopolis Founder

This weekend I had the pleasure of attending Seventh Generation's 20th anniversary.  It was truly a remakable event and a testimony to a dedicated group of folks who started a business with the notion of being as green as possible long before "green" entered our lexicon.  They certainly went through a number of trials during their two decades, but they made the transition from money sink to profitable operation and their growth continues.  Good job, Seventh Generation!

Isn't It Time To Junk Your Junk Mail!
Greenopolis Thought Leader

It may surprise many of you to learn that the number one thing heading into our landfills on a daily basis here in the US is paper.  That’s right, plain old paper.  Something that is easy to recycle, but instead ends up sitting out eternity in the middle of some garbage tomb where 50 years from now it will still be completely legible.

Doesn’t make sense does it? » read more

Where Does All The Junk Come From?
Greenopolis Thought LeaderGreenopolis Founder

Its amazing how much junk can pile up...even if you’re committed to reducing your overall consumption.  I’ve spent the last month cleaning out my house in preparation for a move and it just makes me realize that we are such a society of accumulators -- whether we like it or not.

Flying Objects Not Green In a Hurricane
Greenopolis Thought LeaderGreenopolis Founder

Tropical Storm Fay is heading our way expected to churn past here in the early morning hours Tuesday as a hurricane. I confess, we’re not as ready as we should be, but this time we have the parts and pieces to finalize the plan. Two thirds of the storm panels are in place over windows and French doors. There will always be a mad dash to gather up anything in the surrounding yard that could become airborne and penetrate the house. (Did I tell you about the flying kayak that landed on the porch?)

Zero Waste in Nova Scotia
Greenopolis Thought LeaderGreenopolis Founder

Greetings!  This is Blog #7 of the EcoTipping Points Project series. Today's topic: how one town managed to eliminate the need for a new landfill. Here's the story by Amanda Suutari:

It was an ambitious plan for the small town (population 600) of Annapolis Royal to achieve zero waste by the year 2005. » read more

Plastax on Shopping Bags
Greenopolis Thought LeaderGreenopolis Founder

It’s ironic that something with a useful life of about 10 minutes would last for hundreds of years in our landfills.

I grew up in Germany, where everyone routinely brings their own shopping bag to the store. If you forget, you will be charged for every plastic bag the store provides. » read more

Morning After
Greenopolis Thought LeaderGreenopolis Founder

I figured I might as well get to the beach before daylight, since I awoke around 5:00 a.m. I love the morning solace, but I also was curious to see what the crowds had wrought during the holiday melee.

While I could barely distinguish an end to the boardwalk in the dim early light, the real first comer, a pair of narrow headlights was bearing down my way.  In a moment, more headlights from another, a smaller vehicle.  » read more

This post from the the EPA, just in time for summer fun. The oceans are more fragile than we were taught and our junk is a real threat to marine life, not just an eyesore. So recycle it, compost it, contain it, write about it and earn points on Greenopolis!

What I Need is a System
Greenopolis Thought LeaderGreenopolis Founder

The first voicemail I had today was from a friend making a 6:30 a.m. emergency trip to the supermarket for breakfast and lunchbox items. She called from the parking lot.

“I just bought reusable shopping bags,” she advised me. “It’s funny; now I feel like everyone is noticing my bags - - like they probably think I have them full of fresh fruit and vegetables instead of the frozen waffles, Lunchables and pizza. I remembered what you said about status or stigma are often the reasons people change.”
