Lace up for the Environment
As you're watching the Olympics over the next couple of weeks, be on the lookout for athletes wearing green shoelaces. These athletes aren't making a fashion statement (though they do look pretty cool); they're making an environmental statement.
A new non-profit named GreenLaces is aiming to promote environmental awareness and sustainability education. Recognizing that athletes are always on the public stage (especially during the Olympics), as well as they influence athletes have on society, they felt there was no better group of people to champion environmental causes. So they gave athletes green shoelaces. They're also giving these athletes an environmental education, so that they can help to green their particular sport and promote green messages to their supporters. According to their site, there are currently 42 athletes wearing their laces at the Games. They hope to enlist 1,000 supporters by the Closing Ceremonies. They also have the lofty goal of distributing 1 million pairs of laces by 2009. I think is a reall great way to promote eco-awareness. If you would like to buy a pair, just visit their website. They're only $5!

Which athletes are those? Another issue is that the shoes that they are wearing take over 100 years to decompose. However the major running shoe company Brooks has made one of its bestselling shoes, the Trance 8, with greener materials that decompose in 20 years.
That is so cool. I hope the news gets out so that this cause gets good publicity!
