'Rock Rabbit' Another Climate Victim
Greenopolis Founder

Liv Greene

The American Pika, or 'Rock Rabbit,' is becoming just another victim of climate change. In fact, researchers are saying this creature is the "canary in the coal mine" for the American West, a sign of more drastic changes to come. This animal is the first warning sign because it is so sensitive to heat. The pika lives at high altitudes where the temperatures stay low. Even a temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit can endanger the pika if it is exposed for longer than an hour or two.

As the pika's habitat, and the planet as a whole, warms, it is forced to move to higher and higher altitudes. If temperatures continue to rise, the pika will be trapped at the top. Public opinion may not care about this one species, but if this is the sign of things to come, it's very concerning. Not to mention, look how cute it is!

In April of this year, the Center for Biological Diversity in California petitioned the state Fish and Game for the pika to be recognized as threatened. This request was denied. Attempts are still being made to ensure the safety of the American Pika, but if actions are not taken and commitments made, the pika's fate could be sealed, along with the fates of many of its neighbors.
