Our neighborhood has a lot of children. Since our neighborhood is trying to live a green lifestyle, the parents are wondering what kinds of stuff would be good for the children to do while the parents are helping out? Any ideas here? (3 votes) »

The best way to get your kids started on a green life style is to first and foremost, set an example of one. After all they will do what they see their parents doing.
Make up some games about what recyclable and what isn't and see if your children can learn the difference between plastic, glass, paper, cardboard, and other things that are not recyclable.
Getting them to plant a seed or small plant is a great idea, they can nurture this and watch it grow, and it really helps.
In general just teaching them to recycle, or plan etc will start them off on the right path. Then it is up to you encourage and support their green education.

Reproduction
Rory Short
Children are a blessing but too many children creates ideal conditions for an ecological collapse. With modern medicine there is no longer any need for any individual to do more than reproduce themselves once, any more reproduction than that is jeopardising everybody's existence.
Children and young people are not surprisingly very concerned about the future and so are very willing to do things which will help to ensure humankinds' future existence. However if their parents are not striving to live in a sustainable way then they will have very poor role models to copy.
If their parents are striving to live sustainably themselves then they, the parents, will be aware of things that their children can do too. Living sustainably requires a revolution in most people's lifestyles and cannot be achieved by applying bandaids to life styles that are essentially environmentally destructive.

One of the best ways to start children on the path to a green lifestyle is to help them learn to garden. This teaches them several skills, including basic soil ecology, responsibility, and it even allows them to play in the dirt.
