Is your lunch green enough?
Submitted by amnichols on Fri, 07/11/2008 - 10:05am.
The average school-age child who packs a lunch generates 67 pounds of waste per school year. That works out to 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for just one average-size elementary school.
So what can you and your children do to reduce the waste? Here are a few tips inspired by Greenopia. Their Greenopia city guidebooks are an easy-to-understand consumer guide filled with local listings for green retailers, service providers, and organizations.

Love your ideas.
Is Your Lunch Green Enough?
This article is very useful for people with children, especially in elementary school. My child has switched from using a different water bottle every day to using a thermos, just one step to help the environment.
my oldest uses a reusable
my oldest uses a reusable lunch bag and since she has had it from the start she don't care, even if her friends have paper bags. Although some of her friends have converted to lunch boxes as well! She also loves the containers I use to pack her food in because of the brightly colored lids. She is also really good at getting her friends to follow her "trends," and their moms have started packing them more healthy and eco-friendly lunches because they have requested them. All it takes is one person!
Individual packaging ridiculous
I find the individual packaging for lunch items ridiculous. They use more packaging just to make "snack pack" sized things then one could ever imagine.
It's too bad that lunch boxes went out of style, we should try to get our kids to bring them back!
Dig up your old star wars, dukes of hazzard and roy rogers lunch boxes!

I'd rather be camping!
I agree that we should bring
I agree that we should bring lunch boxes back. I remember the year in middle school when I "accidentally" threw mine away do I could start brining paper bags because it was cool. However, I didn't know or care about being green then, and now I do.
I don't care if its not cool, use a reusable lunch box/bag!
