Best Buy tests recycling program at some stores

Best Buy will offer electronics product recycling at 117 of its stores as test

June 02, 2008: 10:35 AM EST

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - Electronics retailer Best Buy Inc. on
Monday said it will test an electronics recycling program in 117 U.S.
stores.

Beginning immediately, stores in Baltimore, San Francisco
and Minnesota will allow customers to bring in two electronic devices
per day for recycling at no charge.

Acceptable items include TVs, monitors, computers, phones, cameras and other electronic devices.

Items
that are not accepted in the program include TVs or monitors bigger
than 32 inches, console televisions, air conditioners, microwaves and
appliances.

The program, if successful, could expand across the U.S.

The
company already offers programs nationwide including recycling kiosks
for smaller items, appliance and television haul-away when a customer
purchases a new product at Best Buy, and $100 appliance and TV pickup,
good for two products.

I know that at staples you can bring in certain types of ink cartridges, but I think being able to bring in your electronics as well is a good idea.  These items can be recycled, but most people do not have access to places that will take or recycle them. Its a good thing to start in electronic stores, I hope it works and really takes off. Maybe they could offer discounts or coupons if you brought stuff in?

That would be great if they gave gift certificates. It would make sense for the retailers as a way to get more customers too.
