It seems that Vermont is the Greenest state in the US (according to a Forbes article). That doesn't surprise me. Neither does the fact that most of the top 20 greenest states were either on the West or East Coast. my home state of good old MA is number 11.
I remember back in middle school the town gave out recycling bins and made it "mandatory" to recycle or you would get "fined." Of course no one got fined, but its a good scare tactic. It also got our family big into recycling and that is where my green personality started as well.
Massachusetts
No. 11
Score: 37.8 out of 50
We would have ranked Massachusetts much higher had it not scored so
low on water quality--78.5% of its major water facilities exceeded
their Clean Water Act permits at least once during 2005, according to
U.S. PIRG. That’s second only to Maine. Nonetheless, Massachusetts gets
high marks for its carbon footprint, energy efficiency policy and the
relatively small amount of toxic waste it has to manage. Also, it's
among the highest states with LEED-certified buildings per capita.
Well, better water quality would be good I guess. I don't see anything wrong with it though, but maybe that is because I use a filter.
Our neighboring states did well...New Hampshire is 19, Rhode Island is 9, Conneticut is 6, and Vermont is 1. New York, Maryland, and New Jersey are also in the top 20.

New Hampshire is only number 19 . . .I thought we were better than that but I guess not. I wish the article had details about why each state received which score . . .
