Crying on a Sunny Day

It is a sunny day here in Vermont, but I like most in America am down in the dumps.  And I think a lot of it has to do with our current crisis in leadership.  We have little pride in what the presidency has become and scanter confidence that Congress is going to do anything that will help America become the great world leader we once were.  And no place is this more evident than in energy policy.

Yesterday, for example, I watched some of the statements about the current energy legislation.  I find it amazing that folks in Congress think we are so mentally enfeebled that we cannot fathom large numbers.  That we will be amazed when they say that they are investing hundred of millions in renewables and research on ways to beat climate change.  Do they think that because millions and billions sound alike that we do not know the difference?

We are investing hundreds of billions of dollars in two countries on behalf of an outdated energy path and Congress is trying to convince us that a few hundred million is an appropriate response to this crisis that is impacting everyone.  Folks are going to be dying this winter because of oil prices and the lack of a clear energy solution.  That is serious business and Congress responds by placing on the table what amounts to several week's receipts to the current Batman movie.  Our message to them should be: Give us a break and call us when you want to invest hundreds of billions of dollars.  Call us when you want to lead us out of the energy crisis and make us world leaders again.

And don't even get me started on offshore oil drilling--that is truly nonsense on stilts.
