Progress?

In the beginning there was conservation.  We sought to save species and special places.  we sought to save that and preserve that.  Our actions were removed from us and there was a certain measure of denial in our actions.  Things still got worse.

Then came environmentalism.  We were in more of a panic and started pointing fingers.  They caused this and they had to mend their ways.  We talked of water and air pollution and laid blame at the feet of corporations. Because they were obvious villians and easy targets.  It felt good to blame and have a scapegoat we could direct our frustration towards.  But even when we tamed some of the beasts, things were still getting worse and we were worse not better off for the experience.

And now in true Pogo fashion the chickens have come home to roost and we know it is not that we have to save but us.  It is not they we have to blame or stop but us.  And as we one-by-one grasp this reality we also realize that it is not that, they or them who will save us but it is us.  This is the reality of sustainability-it is finally all about us.

Why else would Al Sharpton and Pat Robertson or Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich all sing with the same voice and deliver the same message on global warming as they have recently?  We stand simultaneously on a cliff of great peril and a broad plain of possibilities.  The latter is the great promise of websites like this one where people understand and are realizing what exists on the great, flat surface of our future.

Get involved where you can and rediscover what you and your neighbors can accomplish.

The earth has not been environmentally friendly since creation. The industrial age just made progression towards an environmentally friendly earth even worse, not better. Al Gore is right when it comes to global warning, because we are the ones that are causing it.
