Reusing Plastic Bags

PrintPrintE-mailE-mail 2 comments

Yesterday my wife made me feel guilty for taking one of her favorite "disposable" plastic bags.  And I am sure it was not a casual comment.  She was really attached to that bag and the message was take it, wash it, and bring it back to me.

It is the type of bag that American's casually throw away by the millions each day, while at the same time they are buying millions and millions to replace them.  Doesn't make much sense, does it?  The solution to this could be having a wife or husband like me and a "bag tree."

A bag tree? When my wife and lived in Vermont a good friend gave us a bag tree, which is basically part of the main trunk of a small tree with many short branches sticking out to the side.  You hang a bag tree on the wall and use it to dry plastic bags for reuse.  It is a thrifty kitchen appliance that more folks should have.

So hang up your bags and hold them dear.  But don't be suprised if the resealable one that once held sliced almonds becomes coveted by all.

That sounds like a neat idea. I've never heard of a bag tree before.

She made it from an old distributor cap from an automobile and old chopsticks from our last Chinese meal. She stuck the chopsticks into each of the holes ontop of the distributor cap where the spark plug wires would be. 10 years later, it still sits on top of our kitchen counter above the sink and dries ziplock bags. I've mostly switched to brown waxed paper for the kids lunches though, and we reuse those too.

Each of us can make a difference. Together we make THE difference!
