Stop Geoengineering Before it Starts

When I say geoengineering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoengineering) a lot of you will probably just ask: What?  But it is another of a long line of bad ideas brought to you by the same type of folks who brought cane toads to Queensland and mongooses to Hawaii--i.e., those folks who think they understand the complexity of nature and think they are smarter.  GMO crops would fit in this camp as well.

Basically the concept of geoengineering is to create actions that will mitigate the impacts of climate change either by reducing carbon dioxide levels or production or by making the planet more reflective and thereby lessening the greenhouse effect.  These are grand, planetary scale experiments that are being contemplated right now at the highest levels of our and other governments. (As if the grand experiment of fossil-fuels has not put us at enough risk already.)

In my mind they are manifestations of the depth of our societal sickness and addiction to fossil-fuels.  Geoengineering says that we will contemplate anything and I mean anything to avoid dealing with our addiction--even going so far as to inject massive amounts of poisons into our atmosphere to save us.

How about an alternative: We finally grow up and do something about our addiction?  That seems largely more logical than throwing our collective hands up in the air and taking steps that the proponents acknowledge have serious side-effects and the opponents see as life-threatening for all on the Earth.  We need to send the message now that we've seen the light and will get ourselves under control rather than "drug" the whole planet to cover for our lack of discipline and overindulgence.  Get to know about these schemes and let your voice be heard.
