How soon will plug-in cars rule the road
Submitted by Co-op America on Tue, 10/28/2008 - 6:58pm.
Sooner than you think. A revolution is coming on our nation's highways, and if US carcompanies don't join it, they'll be left behind. We’ve been choosing greenersolutions like walking, biking, driving less, making biodiesel from waste, andpurchasing hybrids for years. Ifyou must drive, the best option is almost here, as the best automobiletechnology for cutting down our emissions and getting off fossil fuels isplug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles! Plug-ins are WIN-WIN-WIN for theclimate, energy independence, and saving on fuel costs because: 1. they run onelectricity alone for most daily commutes (saving drivers more than half theirfuel costs!), 2. they can evenstore power that can be used to run a household (so eventually your can becomea big storage battery for solar!), and 3. the gasoline internal combustionengine is so inefficient, the National Renewable Energy Lab calculated that theswitch to plug-ins would reduce climate emissions by 42% over those that comefrom gas-driven cars! While GM and Chrysler have bothannounced plans to release plug-in or electric vehicles by 2010, Ford CEO AlanMulally recently downplayed any form of electric car in the near term, sayingthat Ford will focus on improving the internal combustion engine. That's ridiculous! It'slike a telecommunications company saying it would rather improve landlines thancompete with the iPhone – only with far more grave consequences. In thiseconomy, Ford's refusing to go with plug-ins is like signing its own deathwarrant. So, we think FORD needsto HEAR FROM YOU today! Please sign onto our letterdemanding that Ford step up and develop new cars with the clean-energytechnology of today here: http://www.coopamerica.org/takeaction/ford/ As always, you can check out more information ongreen energy and other ways to live sustainably on our website (www.coopamerica.org). Thanks for your help, and we encourage you to stay DRIVEN.
