The residents of Coal River Valley in West Virginia areabout to have one of the last mountains left intact in the area stripped byMassey Energy by means of Mountaintop Removal mining. According to Coal RiverMountain Watch, if the coal-mining operation proceeds as planned, Valleyresidents can expect to witness the destruction of ten square miles of themountain and the filling of 18 valleys and streams with ten miles of miningwaste.
Our friends at Coal River Mountain Watch have joined withresidents of the Coal River Valley in West Virginia to propose the developmentof a 440 megawatt wind farm on Coal River Mountain as an economically viablealternative to a planned mountaintop removal coal-mining project. The wind farm brings green jobs totheir community and provides clean, renewable energy – without theenvironmental and community devastation of coal.
YOU can HELP by learning more about how to support thisproject and the local community by visiting the Coal River Wind website here: http://www.coalriverwind.org/and signing Coal River’s petition to WV governor Joe Manchin to rescind thestate’s permits for the new polluting mountaintop-removal operation here: http://www.coalriverwind.org/?page_id=28
